Top 10 TV Shows of the Decade (2000-2009)

Although it hasn’t necessarily been a particularly bad decade for music or film, I don’t think the noughties will be remembered as a particularly special era for these art forms. This decade will be remembered as the golden age of television – when TV junk food gave way to brain food.

As Emily Nussbaum from New York Magazine puts it,

“This was most centrally and importantly the first decade when television became recognizable as art, great art: collectible and life-changing and transformative and lasting. As the sixties are to music and the seventies to movies, the aughts—which produced the best and worst shows in history—were to TV. It was a period of exhilarating craftsmanship and formal experimentation, accompanied by spurts of anxious grandiosity (for the first half of the decade, fans compared anything good to Dickens, Shakespeare, or Scorsese, because nothing so ambitious had existed in TV history).”

Here are 10 of my favourites from the last 10 years:

  1. The Sopranos (1999-2007)
  2. Six Feet Under (2001-2005)
  3. The Wire (2002-2008)
  4. The Office (BBC) (2001-2003)
  5. Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000-present)
  6. Mad Men (2007-present)
  7. Dexter (2006-present)
  8. 30 Rock (2006-present)
  9. The West Wing (1999-2006)
  10. Flight of the Conchords (2007-2009)
